In his presidential address, William Tierney will examine the twin themes of how educational organizations might improve access and equity, and what the role of the intellectual is in the elimination of poverty.  He will focus on how high schools might improve college readiness and access to a postsecondary education based on the extant literature.  Then, he will address how education scholars need to broaden their work beyond the confines of the academy, and become more engaged with bringing about change aimed at creating a more equitable society.

On the eve of the U.S. Senate’s release of its Comprehensive Immigration Reform legislation, Olivas will summarize legal and other governance issues concerning immigration and higher education. Olivas will address what educators should be doing to recognize and facilitate the incorporation of immigrant students into educational institutions and larger communities, and the outlook for “DREAMers.”

Diversity ≠ Inclusion: Translating Access into Equity in Higher Education

Tienda, who is the daughter of Mexican migrant laborers, has focused her research on race and ethnic differences in various areas of social inequality, ranging from poverty and welfare to education and employment. Through various studies of immigration, population diversification and concentrated poverty, she has documented factors that both perpetuate and reshape socioeconomic inequality. In this session, Tienda will examine why access to higher education doesn’t necessarily equate equity for certain groups.

Education, Racial Inequality, and the Future of the American Democracy

Noguera will address how schools can be transformed to counter social and racial inequality to promote mobility and community development. He will focus on strategies for integrating health and other social services into schools; engaging students and parents as partners in the educational process; linking learning to community development needs; and creating educational institutions that foster problem solving, curiosity and critical thinking through the use of technology and experiential learning.

Evidence and Activism: Research to Challenge Structures of Inequality

In her lecture, Jeannie Oakes will explore the idea that efforts to make schools more socially just are most compelling when they are driven by a blend of social theory, evidence, and activism. The power of this blend is revealed in analyses of the shifting landscape of economic and social inequality over the past several decades and in educators’ and activists’ work to disrupt the links between economic and social inequality and educational opportunities and outcomes. Oakes analysis makes clear that social scientists must play a critical role in the struggle for socially just schooling.

A native of Nogales, Mexico, and a former elementary and middle school teacher, Sanchez focuses on the “three p’s” of education reform: politics, policy and pedagogy. He has reported recently on Common Core, the falsifying of test scores, and the Pell Grant recipient graduation rates. In this wide-ranging session, Sanchez will discuss the challenges facing low-income students, at all levels of education, in today’s America.

Abstract:
Guadalupe Valdés will address one key aspect of the equity and opportunity challenge in the American context: the future education of English Language Learners (ELLs). The focus of this lecture will be on language itself and on the often controversial questions that surround language. Emphasis is placed on the premise that equity and excellence can only be achieved for non-English-background if educators, students, the families of these students, their supporters, and the public in general have a clear understanding of what language is and how it works, how it is acquired, how it can be measured, and how instruction can support its acquisition.

Leading Institutional Culture Change: The Role of Qualitative and Quantitative Research and Evaluation

Abstract:
Twenty-five years ago, in the late 1980s, Freeman Hrabowski's research questions led to the creation of the Meyerhoff Scholars Program, now a national model for preparing talented students of color for research careers in science and engineering (S&E).  A defining component of the Meyerhoff Program involves continuous programmatic evaluation and research – qualitative and quantitative.  From the program’s inception, these continuous efforts have led to (1) making programmatic improvements that have strengthened student outcomes; (2) replicating the program’s key components in the university’s S&E and non-S&E curricula, thus benefiting students of all backgrounds and across disciplines; and (3) replicating the program on other college and university campuses. 

Significantly, the Meyerhoff Scholars Program, which initially was the impetus for culture change on my campus, has become the basis for ongoing culture change and innovation there (e.g., course redesign across STEM disciplines), and a model for institutional culture change elsewhere.
