The Inaugural Film Festival at the 2013 Annual Meeting in San Francisco will include an amateur film competition. Any AERA member may submit a documentary or narrative film to be considered for screening as part of the AERA Amateur Film Festival. Films must have been made no earlier than 2010 and focus on issues broadly related to education. They must be between 15 and 75 minutes long. Prizes will be awarded for the best films, including free registration for the 2014 Annual Meeting for one lucky winner. Some of the filmmakers will be invited to discuss their work at the screenings.
To qualify as amateur, films in the competition cannot be tied to a domestic distribution deal. Those that have screened on a U.S. national network or cable television or have been distributed to public national theaters prior to the festival dates are also ineligible for the competition. The entrants must not have had a previous domestic distribution deal or be employed full time as filmmakers. They may have received advice or assistance from filmmaking professionals while making the film, but must not have given any financial compensation in exchange.
