December 2014

The bill to reauthorize the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), the Strengthening Education Through Research Act (SETRA), H.R. 4366, failed to receive a vote on the Senate floor before the Senate’s adjournment on Tuesday, December 16.

According to Education Week, procedural concerns expressed by several Republicans held the bill from a Senate vote during the lame-duck session, despite its being included on the Senate calendar. The House of Representatives passed the bill on a voice vote in May, and the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) unanimously approved the bill in September.

It is expected that the HELP Committee and the House Education and Workforce Committee will move quickly to consider a nearly identical IES reauthorization bill in the upcoming 114th Congress.
