Shirley Malcom American Association for the Advancement of Science
Dr. Shirley Malcom is head of Education and Human Resources Programs at the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In this capacity, she seeks to enhance public science literacy. Through her work, she is also known internationally as a leader in efforts to improve access of girls and women to STEM education and careers, while seeking to increase their use of science and technology as tools for personal empowerment. She is a former member of the National Science Board, the policy-making body of the National Science Foundation, and served on President Clinton’s Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology. Dr. Malcom has been duly acknowledged for her manifold contributions, for example, by being awarded 16 honorary degrees.
The Distinguished Public Service Award recognizes an individual who has worked to enact or implement policies that were well grounded in education research, or who has been at the forefront of efforts to increase recognition and support for education research.
The award is given by members of AERA’s Government Relations Committee, on behalf of the Association. It was established in 2002 and presented for the first time on April 23, 2003 during AERA’s 84th Annual Meeting in Chicago.
